A photograph's tone can be changed in a large number of ways to effect it's mood and artistic quality. This page shows many popular options, but the possibilities are not necessarily limited to what is shown here - basically, if you can describe what you want, I can probably find a way of doing it.

Nostalgia Gives a slightly washed out look with accentuated color highlights like an old photograph.
Black & White Desaturation of all colors.
Old Black & White Photo Film from the earlier days of photography had a particular way of responding to light. The end result has a midtone stretching and a darkening of low light areas.
Cyan Photoplate From the early days of photography, glass photoplates used at the time often showed a cyan shift.
Sepia Extremely old photographs have a brown, sepia look to them.
Warm A blending with an orange color that varies depending on saturation and other factors. This is very effective at transforming sunset photos and can give a romantic cast to certain types of other photos.
Cool A blending with a blue color that varies depending on saturation and other factors. This can make certain types of scenes, such as beach scenes, look much more natural.
Color Blend The image can be blended with any color you like; in this example, it is slightly blended with green to make the trees look richer.
Saturation Over-saturation of the colors in an image can significantly boost its vibrancy.
Negative As though the photo was a negative rather than a print. Can also be used to turn slides into natural photos.
Posterized All the colors in the image are skewed towards a few bold colors.
